Get a thermostat set-back timer. If no one is home during the day you can easily turn down the heat or air conditioning 5-8 degrees or so. At night when you are sleeping turn back the heat and use the covers to keep you warm. During the summer you can turn the thermostat up when you go to sleep. You do not need to keep the house as cool as during the day because your body is at rest and will be cooler naturally (also you will be sleeping and won't notice the difference).
